[Evolution Korea](https://evolutionkr.kr/)
Up until recently the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. However, silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which may result in variations in genes or whole genomes. Over time these changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction can result in the creation of completely new species.
The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings over the years as it has taken shape in the sciences and other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time, this genetic variability can result in the development of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven to be accurate by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the foundations of biology, and aids scientists understand how living things work and develop. Evolution also demonstrates how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world and also to make important discoveries, such as developing new treatments.
The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains as much about the universe as the life on our planet. It has been thoroughly studied and verified for many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, believe in the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to note that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religions, since the theory only deals with objects, events and processes within the physical world.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Some Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestry that is shared with other animals.
It is crucial that science educators advocate for the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the opposition to evolution has been rising. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support vary. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as the development of new medicines or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas others have a profound faith in God and want to understand how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and all that is in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although not all creationists are Christian but many are. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The YECs are perhaps the most well known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe as well as life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both kinds of creationism deny that scientific principles such as biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life began on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterward. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.
In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.
STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This sparked an interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
